Photography
We offer the NCFE Level 1/2 Certificate in Photography, a nationally recognised qualification awarded by NCFE. This course is designed for students with a creative interest in photography and visual media, providing a strong foundation in both practical skills and theoretical understanding. Equivalent to GCSE-level study, the qualification supports learners in developing technical competence, creative confidence, and an awareness of the photographic industry.
Throughout the course, students explore a wide range of topics that develop their knowledge of photographic techniques and visual communication. Content includes understanding camera functions and settings, composition and lighting techniques, digital image editing, studio and location photography, and the work of influential photographers. Students also learn to plan and develop photographic projects, respond to creative briefs, and present their work professionally. Emphasis is placed on experimentation, creativity, and the development of a personal style.
Assessment is coursework-based, enabling students to demonstrate their progress through a portfolio of evidence. This may include practical photographic outcomes, planning documentation, written evaluations, and research into photographers and photographic styles. Learners are assessed against clear grading criteria at Level 1 (Pass) and Level 2 (Pass, Merit, Distinction, and Distinction*). Some components may be externally moderated to ensure national standards are maintained, supporting fairness and consistency in assessment.
Successful completion of the Level 1/2 Certificate in Photography provides a strong platform for further study and career development. Students may progress to Level 3 qualifications in Photography, Art and Design, or Creative Media, as well as apprenticeships in creative industries. The qualification also supports future pathways into careers such as professional photography, graphic design, digital media production, marketing, or visual arts, equipping learners with transferable skills in creativity, communication, and project management.
