Sociology
We offer the AQA GCSE Sociology qualification, an engaging and thought-provoking course that encourages students to explore how society shapes our lives. Awarded by AQA, this GCSE develops students’ understanding of social structures, institutions, and processes, while building valuable analytical and evaluative skills. The course is ideal for students who are curious about social issues, inequalities, culture, and how communities function at local, national, and global levels.
Throughout the course, students study key sociological topics such as the family, education, crime and deviance, and social stratification. Learners explore different sociological perspectives and theories, examining how factors such as gender, ethnicity, age, and social class influence people’s experiences in society. Students also develop an understanding of research methods used by sociologists, learning how evidence is gathered, analysed, and evaluated. Contemporary case studies are used to ensure learning is relevant and reflective of modern society.
Assessment is through two externally examined written papers at the end of the course. Each paper assesses knowledge and understanding of sociological concepts, the ability to apply theory to real-life contexts, and skills in analysis and evaluation. Students respond to a range of question types, including multiple-choice, short-answer, source-based, and extended written responses. Clear mark schemes and assessment objectives ensure that students are rewarded for demonstrating accurate knowledge, critical thinking, and well-structured arguments.
GCSE Sociology provides an excellent foundation for further study at Level 3, including A Level Sociology, Psychology, Law, Politics, Health and Social Care, or other humanities and social science subjects. The qualification supports progression into a wide range of careers, including social work, education, criminology, law enforcement, community development, public services, and research. Above all, the course equips students with transferable skills in critical thinking, communication, and evidence-based reasoning that are highly valued in both further education and employment.
